Leading By Example; Becoming The Greenest Courier Company in Canada
For millennia, people have been transporting goods. However, it’s only in more recent years that mankind has developed the means to deliver further and wider. This has resulted in an increased awareness of the effects the transportation sector is having on the environment. Today, many businesses are paying much closer attention to their carbon footprint.
One such organisation is Purolator, which is celebrating over 60 years of delivering promises to customers. From humble beginnings, the company has established itself as a trusted partner and familiar brand, that is part of every community across Canada. Purolator has a proud and rich history, filled with a number of important milestones from its inception, to where it is today.
Purolator’s President and CEO, John Ferguson, says, “We’ve built a national network in every community across the country. Today we look at ourselves as having an incredible platform that’s been built over many years. Purolator’s vision for making Canada stronger really is about connecting into the communities and to the customers we serve.”
To avoid the catastrophic impacts of climate change, Purolator has set ambitious goals to reduce its GHG emissions. It is taking meaningful action in key areas of its business to support its aspiration of being the greenest courier company in Canada.
The company is developing a renewable energy strategy to increase its use of renewable electricity year over year until 2030. It is also introducing all-electric cargo-vans, step-vans and e-bikes to fundamentally alter Purolator’s fleet operations and transition to zero-emission deliveries. To achieve its 2030 goal to electrify 60% of its last-mile delivery vehicles, Purolator will introduce more than 3,500 all-electric vehicles at over 60 terminals across Canada. Purolator expects to invest approximately $1 billion over the next seven years, the single largest investment in its history with more than $100M invested in 2023 alone.
In addition to its focus on environmental impact, Purolator is also successfully investing time in the well-being of its employees by creating a positive work environment through a holistic approach that considers social, physical and mental health. What makes Purolator unique is its dedication to helping not only its employees as individuals, but also their families and the broader community.
By fostering a people-first culture, combined with the company’s customer focus, performance excellence, and commitment to continuous improvement, Purolator continues to grow its network and bring exciting innovations to market, year after year.
Since 2003, Purolator has helped alleviate hunger in Canada through its employee-led Purolator Tackle Hunger® program. Through annual fundraising and food collection initiatives and events, the company supports food banks across Canada and has raised more than 20 million pounds* of food since its inception.
“The most exciting part of this job really is the good that we do in communities across Canada,” says Ferguson. “Every voice needs different support and resources at different times in their life. By bringing new initiatives to the workplace that affect the health of our employees… what you leave behind is your legacy.”
