How A Global Chemical Company Became An Engine for A Sustainable Future
We cannot maintain our quality of life as human beings, our diversity of life on the planet, or Earth’s ecosystems unless we embrace sustainability. Sustainable living is something we must address at all scales and in all parts of the world. Fortunately, the UN’s SDGs provide everyone around the globe guidance for addressing this most pressing challenge.
PTT Global Chemical Public Company (GC) is one of the global pioneering petrochemical businesses that leads the people and the community to tackle this challenge by developing technology-enabled environment-friendly products and innovations to improve people’s lives and boost the long prosperity of the planet.
CEO at GC, Dr. Kongkrapan Intarajang says, “The way we make our business sustainable is to make our products and our business serve the long-term megatrends.”
With GC’s vision of Chemistry for Better Living, it ensures that all operations have been conducted in line with ESG principles. GC Group has been rated number one in the world for sustainability in the DJSI Chemicals Sector for 4 consecutive years as well as continuously rated by Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its operations in water management and environmental management regarding climate change.
GC is dedicated to developing innovative products that can provide convenience, safety, and sustainability for the people and the planet through its Decarbonisation Pathways. Dr. Intarajang explains, “We utilize a minimum amount and variety of resources, and we connect the loop from suppliers to customers in the circular economy concept.”
Being committed to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2030 while achieving net zero carbon by 2050, GC develops three strategies to ensure the goal can be delivered: Efficiency-driven: increasing operational efficiency and reducing waste emissions, Portfolio-driven: transforming business portfolio into a low-carbon business while maintaining corporate growth, and Compensation-driven: utilizing nature-base and technology-base solutions for carbon capture to drive decarbonisation and compress emitted CO2 underground.
While on its journey of searching for better, innovative solutions corresponding to the net zero goal, GC has been evaluating its own business for iteration of updates while aiming to attain lower carbon emissions and higher production values. It will retire certain products, while moving towards new and more sustainable options. What’s more, GC also takes effort in decarbonization by compensation with carbon capturing technology. Also, it conducts product design with the principle of easier to recycle and more durable. For instance, GC’s innovative Volatile Organic Compounds coating can upgrade the wind bars on wind towers with more efficiency and less maintenance.
GC embeds innovation in every aspect of its business. It designs YOUTURN Platform, a plastic-waste sorting platform, to extend the knowledge and inspiration of recycling and sustainability to the public, starting from creating awareness on waste sorting to the youth while furthering the proper knowledge on waste management to all stakeholders. “We help people to understand a bit more about waste management, that they can help to provide the used plastic products and we collect them, provide logistics and bring them into recycling plants,” explains Dr. Chaya Chandavasu, Executive Vice President of Sustainability at GC.
Moving forward, GC will continuously carry the torch of achieving sustainability and improving people’s lives through innovation and technology as well as thrive for collaboration and inspiration. As Dr. Intarajang believes, “In the longer run, my wish is to extend the knowledge, inspiration, and the help to the other sectors that may not be directly related to us.”
