Building a better, socially responsible, sustainable future for all of humanity.
As the United Nations approaches its centenary, there is a growing desire to honour its enduring legacy by embracing its Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs – adopted by the UN in 2015, aim to enhance the quality of life for all people across the globe and drive the advancement of worldwide environmental and energy standards.
The transportation industry is responsible for a substantial percentage of global oil consumption, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Fortunately, the industry’s shift from traditional combustion engines to battery-powered vehicles has gained momentum, offering opportunities for a more sustainable future.
However, it is crucial that boundaries continue to be pushed in uncovering new ways that transportation could become even more sustainable, especially in the delivery service sector in dense, urban regions. With transport accounting for 64% of global oil consumption, 27% of all energy use and 23% of the world’s energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. There is an increased need for a transition from the traditional internal combustion engine to battery–powered alternatives.
AM Batteries (AMB) and Faction are leading the way in promoting sustainability in different areas of the transportation sector. These companies prioritise environmental consciousness and set the standard for a greener future, paving the way for a more sustainable tomorrow.
Dr. Yan Wang, AM Batteries co-founder and CEO, dives into the intricacies of battery production, including the industry-standard process and its issues. According to Wang, “We find that drying and solvent recovery actually accounts for roughly 47% of energy consumption, also 30% of manufacturer cost. We want to revolutionize the green manufacturing of lithium battery electrodes.”
Dr. Wang unveils AM Batteries innovative solution to revolutionize the lithium-ion battery industry: a new process to manufacture battery electrodes that is faster, cheaper and environmentally sustainable. This groundbreaking approach promises to not only benefit the planet but also enhance industry process efficiency.
In 2020, cars and medium to heavy trucks were responsible for a staggering 66% of global transportation emissions. Faction is leading the way in addressing this issue.
This pioneering company specializes in compact, driverless transportation that is smart for the city and affordable for the planet. With their micro-delivery vehicles, Faction is offering a modern and sustainable alternative to traditional urban transportation problems.
“Urban transportation right now is horribly broken – deliveries are about the same. Part of the problem is that we are trying to do one size fits all by using automobiles for almost every application. The reality is the average trip is one to two people, three to five miles,” said Faction CEO Ain McKendrick.
“We believe the smarter approach is to right size the vehicles and apply the vehicle to the job we are asking it to do.”
TDK Ventures, supporting the development of AM Batteries and Faction, deeply believe in the impact these companies could make, as they begin to realise their ambitions. The company is motivated by a desire to enable groundbreaking paradigm shifts in the sustainable electrification of the world, especially mobility, with the aim of building a better, socially responsible, sustainable future for all of humanity.
