The future of hygiene and health – how a holistic approach to sustainability is driving a healthier world.

Nov 2, 2022

It has only been about 200 years since humans discovered the bacteria and viruses that cause illness. Since then, keeping clean has become the most important part of staying healthy.

Anke Renz, global vice-president, R&D, personal care at Essity, says that the company’s products play an important role in improving well-being at all stages of life: “We cover a very wide range of consumer needs, which is challenging, but it’s also very rewarding to know you can make a positive difference across all these life stages.”

“The future will be much more digitally enabled, much more personalised as a consequence, and much more sustainable.”

Tuomas Yrjölä, president global brand, innovation and sustainability, Essity

As new technologies open up new possibilities, Essity is striving to become more sustainable and digital.

Mr Yrjölä highlights one such initiative. “Tena SmartCare is a reusable sensor, which we attach to the incontinence product. It tells you, with data to a phone or an app, when to change the product.”

Donato Giorgio, president, global supply chain at Essity, says that the company has seen a number of sustainability breakthroughs in the last two years, including a mill that uses wheat straw to produce paper and an oil substitute.

Essity believes that the future of the company is bright, with increased awareness of the role that hygiene plays in long-term health.
